Our Story
Nquthu Rural Horse Riding and Breeding Association
The Nquthu Rural Horse Riding and Breeding Association has its roots in the 1980s when elders in the community came together to form a traditional horse riding and breeding group. The aim was to bring the community together, promote ubuntu, and teach the youth about tradition, discipline, and how to behave in the community.
For years, the association played a vital role in keeping the youth disciplined and out of trouble, while preserving cultural heritage. In 2000, the association partnered with the Nquthu Municipality to improve horse welfare and provide training, receiving support such as horse feed, blankets, and kits.
The association has extensive experience in organizing horse racing events, hosting thrilling competitions that attract riders and spectators from across the region. Their efforts have produced talented jockeys, including over 40 male jockeys and more than 15 female jockeys, who have gone on to compete at various levels.
The association’s commitment to youth development is evident in its focus on skills transfer, mentorship, and job creation. Many young people have benefited from the association’s programs, gaining valuable experience in horse care, riding, and racing.
Fast forward to 2024, the association formally registered as an organization. In 2025, they received a race course operator license, paving the way for official horse racing events.
